Cake for the World Cup
By Susan Ellis, From The Memphis Flyer:
Fans following the World Cup need cake, do they not?
Well, here you go: a soccer shoe cake from Off the Square Catering.
According to owner Neely Draughon, this cake was created about 3 years ago as a groom's cake. The bride and the groom met while playing soccer. Both had taped soccer shoes. Aw!
One of the shoes was brought in to be used as a reference, and Draughon says that the cake — chocolate with peanut butter icing — was massive, 2 1/2 by 1 foot.
This is the only soccer shoe that they've made, but they've also done a cowboy boot and a lingerie cake involving edible underwear.
"Come up with the concept, and we can make it," Draughon says.
Cakes range from $2.50 to $5 a slice, depending on size and design.
In addition to the cakes, Off the Square caters weddings, and their building, on Overton Square, includes a party room. They also sell food-to-go, such as casseroles.
Off the Square Catering is open Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m., and by appointment for cake consultations.
